The Mood-Boosting Beauty Products You Need Right Now

At 53, I’m well and truly on the mood-swing roller coaster. Not only that, I have two teenagers who are learning to navigate their own hormonal changes, which certainly makes for interesting times! I’m guessing you can relate on some level. Fortunately, I have a cupboard full of aromatic products that that help shift a bad mood quickly.

Ancien | Roll On Pure Essential Oils, $20 each, ancien.com.au

An express dose of instant peace. Just roll onto your pulse points and inhale deeply. A while back, when I made the switch to natural oils, it was hard to find good-quality natural blends, but now it’s much easier, which is great. These roll-ons, hand-crafted in Sydney, work immediately when I need optimism ( Paradise Forever ), clarity for decision-making ( Calm Awaits ), or to stop my mind racing ( O’Gentle Sleep )

Bathing Shed | Fresh Start Bar Soap, $17.27, bathingshed.com

When I was little, we used soap for everything but these days we know many soaps strip our skin of moisture and some also contain non-earth-friendly ingredients such as palm oil. This cold-blended soap is made by hand using traditional Japanese methods. It not only smells heavenly and uplifting – a stimulating hit of lemon, eucalyptus and peppermint – but it softens your skin thanks to its rich fatty acids from Tasmanian hemp seed oil. You can use it on your face, too.

Aveda | Chakra 4 Balancing Body Mist Harmony, $50, aveda.com.au

A spray of this and it feels like you’ve hit the reset button. When our heart chakra is balanced, we feel the love of self and others. I use this comforting mix of sandalwood, organic mandarin and palmarosa, known for its mood supporting benefits, as a gentle reminder to be kind to myself. It also helps me to remember that this stage in my life will not last forever.

Natio | Essential Oils, from $9.95, natio.com.au
Perfect Potion | Light Wooden Ultrasonic Diffuser, $99.95, perfectpotion.com.au
Oil Garden | Essential Oils, from $14.99, oilgarden.com.au

Playing alchemist with quality (Australian-made) essential oils is not just fun, but also cost-effective. You need just a few drops in a diffuser to create bespoke, mood-setting blends. My current fave is a happiness mix of orange, lavender and geranium. I also use lemon myrtle for a zesty burst of motivation in the office.
