Into The Blue
Freestyling
What do fashion photographers and stylists do during lockdown? They get creative. Unable to keep going with business as usual – no shooting models in studios during lockdown - stylist Aileen Marr and photographer Juli Balla headed for the great outdoors and got experimental.
Aileen This shoot didn’t follow any of the usual rules. We didn’t have any models, for a start! How did you choose the locations?
Juli I let myself be inspired by the fashion. I enjoyed the challenge of finding the right location for each piece. I thought back on some of my favourite places I pass on my walks, whether that was a house a street corner, a tree, a bus stop.
Aileen Without a model, we had to get creative. We wanted to show humour, bring a lightness to some of the shots. We must have looked hilarious, raking leaves around Centennial Park to fill our park bench look. We drew a few laughs and smiles from spectators, especially with our balloon model. I did hesitate on the watermelon shot in case it didn’t wash out of the garment. Thankfully it did!
Juli I also enjoyed using only Australian designers. We have such immense talent in the local industry – the chance to showcase their work was really rewarding.
