Tonic Doctor: I’ve Started Snoring

I never used to snore, but that changed a couple of years ago – and now my partner tells me it’s getting worse. Is this just a thing that happens, or is it a medical issue?

Carole, Perth, WA

Snoring does increase with age, although it happens more frequently in men than in women. There does appear to be a relationship between increased snoring and the lowering of ovarian hormones that happens during menopause. However, if your snoring is causing serious concern, you may want to rule out the possibility of obstructed sleep apnoea (OSA), which is associated with an increased risk of diseases including cardiovascular disease. Talk to your GP; they can arrange a sleep study to monitor your sleep and check for any issues.
