Tonic Doctor: I’m Worried About My Receding Gums
Receding gums run in my family, and I’m worried about losing my teeth. What can I do to prevent this?
Just because your parents and relatives have had experience with receding gums doesn’t mean it has to be the same for you. If you feel your gums are receding, it is important to see your dentist for a full diagnosis and to prevent it from progressing.
A number of factors can cause receding gums including severe gum disease, known as periodontal disease, linked to past or current smoking habits, and uncontrolled or poorly controlled diabetes.
Other possible culprits include an overly aggressive tooth brushing technique, and repeated trauma such as a tongue ring pressing against the gums on the lower inside teeth.
Thin gum tissue is at greater risk of receding and if your teeth are positioned prominently or out of alignment – where there is no bone, only gum tissue covering the tooth’s root surface – the risk increases.
To maintain good dental hygiene, be sure to brush teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time, using a toothbrush with soft bristles. Clean between the teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes.
